At Bericote we are constantly trying to improve our carbon footprint. We decided to begin the switch to fully Electric Vehicles (EV), with myself being the first one  – so I thought I’d share my experience and thoughts this far.

EV in 2020 are still seen as a novelty, but every year more advancements are made to make it more attainable for the average person. Many worry that a fully electric car just won’t give them the mileage they need, when in reality, there are 100s of EV (not just made by Tesla) that can cover a range of up to 300 miles on a full charge.

My car for example is a Hyundai Kona EV, tried and tested range is about 250 miles on a full charge; that’s enough charge to get me from London to Birmingham and back again. Above is a photo of me with my EV when I was volunteering for Bericote’s chosen charity in Dartford – YMCA Thames Gateway. We were delivering happiness hampers filled with food and essential supplies to help those most impacted by covid-19.

Another misconception people argue about on EV is ‘there aren’t enough chargers around’. This may have been true a few years ago, but there are currently more than 30,000 charge points across the UK, that’s more chargers than petrol stations. On a rapid charger, you only need to charge up for 30-60 minutes before you can be back on your way. That allows time for you to reply to a few emails, use the facilities or maybe grab a coffee. It’s also easy and affordable to get a charger installed at your home, meaning if you do less than 300 miles in a given day you will be fine.

So far every service station I have stopped at, has had a charge point. Granted, sometimes they aren’t always working, and sometimes they are being used by someone else. Range Anxiety is a thing – will my car make it the next 10 miles to the service station? So yes, it does require a little bit of forward planning if you are covering long distance. There’s a helpful app called ‘zap map’ that shows you all the charging facilities across the UK and allows users to check in and confirm whether it was working when they went.

It’s cheaper to run – about half the cost of a full charge than it is for a full tank of gas. The government also has lots of initiatives in place to encourage the use of electric cars, such as you can freely enter the low emission zones, residents of London get a free parking permit, you get £3,000 towards buying your new EV, a £350 contribution to install a charge point at home and you don’t pay road tax.

Contrary to popular belief, EV offer a great driving experience – they are fast, smooth and responsive. The ride is impeccably quiet, all you can hear is the sound of your tires on the road. Once stationary, it’s very easy to forget your engine is even running. My neighbours must appreciate it.

The advancements of the EV won’t stop yet; over the next 10 years we will see batteries getting more powerful, offering more mileage, the costs will continue to fall, allowing more and more consumers to make the switch, and more innovations such as wireless road charging will develop and grow, making it more convenient for all. Bericote aim to have all our employees on electric/hybrid cars in the next 2-3 years.
